KLEZMER (with the Molinari Quartet)
For this unique concert, the Quartet and its guest artists, André Moisan on clarinet and Jean Saulnier on piano, transport us to the heart of Hebrew musical tradition. Evoking both spiritual contemplation and the exuberant energy of major celebrations, Klezmer bewitches us and touches us deeply. This style, which originated in the major currents of culture in the Middle East, Central Europe and Eastern Europe, has also inspired many great composers such as Mahler, Prokofiev and Shostakovich.
The essence of this concert is the major and remarkable work of the composer Osvaldo Golijov "The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind" for which Mr. Golijov wrote for the clarinet and the bass clarinet, surrounded by a string quartet as well as the brand new creation by Aïrat Ichmouratov composed especially for André Moisan and the Molinari Quartet.

Acclaimed by the public and by international music critics since its foundation in 1997, the Quatuor Molinari (Molinari Quartet) devotes itself to the rich repertoire for string quartets of the 20th and 21st centuries, commissions new works from composers and initiates encounters between musicians, artists and the public. Recipient of 18 Opus prizes awarded by the Conseil québécois de la musique to highlight excellence in concert music, the Molinari Quartet is qualified by Canadian critics as an “essential” and “prodigious” ensemble, even as a “Canadian counterpart to the Kronos and Arditti quartets”. The Molinari Quartet was soloist with the OSM and guest at numerous festivals and concert societies in America, Europe and Asia. QM's recent CDs on the ATMA label have all received unanimous praise from international critics.

Jean Saulnier
Renowned internationally for his mastery of the clarinet, his great musicality and the clarity of his playing, André Moisan has been heard since 1977, as a soloist, chamber musician and at the OSM. Considered to be one of the most brilliant clarinettists of his generation, he has participated in some fifty albums of all genres in Canada and abroad. In addition to his appearances on major international stages, he has also recorded 7 discs as a soloist with ATMA, all of which have received international awards. An accomplished animator and pedagogue, he led the OSM from 1998 to 2008 as well as the OSQ on several occasions. André Moisan conducts regularly in Canada and abroad. He is also an assistant professor in the faculty of music at the Université de Montréal.
